Thought of the day (returns) 28/02/12

So it's Saturday, and like most people on this planet- this is my favourite day of the week. I am writing this while in bed with a cup of Raspberry and Echinacea tea (partly out of choice/partly forced as we have no milk for real tea). My man is snoring away noisily peacefully next to me. I have work to do for uni, but I have decided to take this cosy Saturday morning opportunity to write a blog post.

I have my exercise class at two, so I have worked out that I can write this; get up and do breakfast-y things, put a wash on, tidy up a bit... then get ready for my class...  I can then come back and write my essay...

My thought of the day today is...

Yes. I don't know about you, but I have pretty much hated the month of February. Now this isn't just a selfish kind of proclamation... no no, this is-

FEBRUARY HAS BEEN HORRIBLE TO THE PEOPLE I LOVE TOO.

And so for that reason, cor I am glad it is the shortest month of the year-

BRING ON MARCH.

Has February been rubbish to you too? Has it thrown unrealistic amounts of work at you? Has it allowed you to slack on your New Year's resolution? Has it changed your life and turned it upside down, or opened your eyes to something you could have really done without seeing? Has your car broken down, your boiler broken or your washing machine flooded?

11 things about credit cards that should be taught as part of compulsory education

 Hello my lovelies,

So in this post I am hoping that I might be able to save a few of my younger readers from some sleepless nights worrying about credit card debt.

So, to keep this simple, I have managed to land myself in a little bit of a sticky situation with credit cards. Having recently spoken to a personal banker and received some brilliant advice, I decided that these five things should be taught at school! Because, I don't know about you, but most people just think "ooooh, credit cards are bad"... but here's what I have learned (albeit the hard way).

1. What is credit?

Credit basically refers to the money that you borrow. You either have good, bad or no credit. In order to get good credit you have to borrow money from lenders and very simply- you must pay it back. In turn, to have bad credit, you borrow, and you don't pay it back. Finally, no credit- this basically means that you have never borrowed before.

2. You need credit.

Even if you have never borrowed a single incey wincey teeny weeny bit of credit, and you have a job where you are earning £45,000 a year- chances are, at some point, you will still need "credit" on your side. Whether it's to sign a phone contract; fund a well needed dentistry job; or to buy a house...

3. Where to begin.

Once you are 18, the bank will offer you an overdraft. Immediately, you will probably think this is very dangerous and will turn it down. Don't. It is a good idea to get an overdraft. Even just a tiny one, between £50 and £100. If you are earning a small wage, the idea is that each month you will get paid in to this account and the amount that you have spent in your overdraft will be paid off. By doing this, you will begin to build your credit file- by simply borrowing and repaying.

4. Credit cards.

Please know that these little plastic cards are very dangerous when in the wrong hands. You must know that they can completely f*ck your life up if you don't use them sensibly. At the same time though, they are fantastic.

So, now it's time to use your imagination.

I want you to think of a really really good friend of yours. Now, they have offered to lend you some money, but they are going to need it back before the end of the month.

If you know that you won't be able to pay that money back to your very dear friend- then chances are, you won't borrow it. You would instead seek money from elsewhere, perhaps the famous bank of mum and dad...

But, if you know and feel confident that you can repay this money. Then go ahead, borrow it.

5. Research

Notice that we imagined a close of friend of yours was lending you money. Please remember this when you come to taking out credit cards. It is very easy (and is actually what I did and how I got in to the mess I am in now) to accept a store credit card... DO NOT DO THIS. Go to your bank, or go to a bank that you know and trust (- a friend). This is because Banks tend to have much kinder interest rates than store cards, but I will discuss that further in the Interest section.

So, it really is worth doing your research to find out which company will offer you the best rates- for e.g. there are some companies that will give you your first 30 months interest free... and there are others that will charge you 39% after your first 30 days.

6. Repayments

So, going back to the scenario with your friend... a key  thing that you need to remember, is that you don't want to destroy your friendship with this very good friend of yours, so you must ensure you pay the money back on time.

If, for any reason you can't pay back the entire amount, then you would speak to your friend and say, 'how about I pay you £** this month, and every month until I have paid you off...?' This would be your minimum payment.

It is essential that you pay this amount, because if you don't you will really upset your friend. Remember, they lent you the money as long as you would pay it back within the month- which you didn't; so they agreed that you could pay a minimum amount each month...

So, if you don't pay this back, they're going to be pretty annoyed. And, they are going to tell all of your other friends not to lend you money because you don't stick to your word, and that- basically is your credit file.

The moral of this little scenario that I have made up, is that credit card companies can actually be very very helpful, however they can also turn into the school bully if you don't stick to your word, they can turn everyone against you.

7. Building your credit file.

So, your credit file, building on the friends scenario I used above... your credit file is what your 'friends' (the banks) say about you and your borrowing habits. If you think you have annoyed your friend by missing payments, then sure- they will have put a bad word in against you. If you paid the money back straight away, then they will be telling their friends - 'oh, I lent to suchandsuch and they paid me back straight away'... which therefore, builds your credit file, giving you a better credit score- and encouraging others to lend to you in the future.

8. Interest

So this is the part that can really cause the trouble. Basically, your friend has realised that you aren't going to pay them back, but that is going to cost them money- which obviously they don't want. So, they add interest to your borrowed money. This simply means, that every month that you haven't paid off your outstanding amount, they will increase the amount that you owe them.

Now, there are different types of interest- and they will differ for pretty much every single credit card...

Typically, you will be charged varied interest on card/cash/foreign transactions and there will be a monthly interest, and an annual fee. Long story short- the longer you take to pay back the money you borrowed- the more money you are going to owe. Pretty much all credit card companies will give you the first 30 days on each transaction free of interest.

It is imperative that you know what interest you are paying on your card. Though, if you pay your friend back within that first 30 days every time anyway- then that won't effect you!

Know how much you will be charged to take cash out. This is normally quite a large charge- try not to do this unless it is an absolute emergency.

9. Repairing bad credit

So you have lost the trust of your friends because they know you don't pay them back when you say that they will. So nobody wants to lend you money. This is the tricky part. How do you regain somebody's trust? Well, it takes time, it takes effort, and it takes proving that you aren't going to make the same mistake again... So that is exactly what you have to do.

You must pay off any outstanding debt that you have, if necessary organise a 'debt repayment scheme' with your lender. It is always better to talk to the company and explain your situation than to miss payments.

If you are completely out of depth there are several fantastic companies that will help you every step of the way. (Immediate Financial is a company that has been highly recommended by a few people I know).

10. Credit builder credit cards

So, with my dodgy credit rating at the moment, my fantastic personal banker suggested that I should get a credit builder card. These are dangerously scary- like more scary than ordinary credit cards.

The idea is, even if you have a really terrible credit rating, they will offer you money. This is because they have a hideously high interest rate that means as soon as you build interest on that card you are paying back astronomical amounts. So, they can either make you or break you.

If you are clever with it- you can use it for a while to rebuild your credit, and then you can try to apply for an account with more generous lending conditions.

11. Fake borrowing

This is the best way to use a credit card. It is simple... you only buy things that you already have the money for... for example- if you are buying petrol... pay with your credit card, then use your mobile banking app to transfer the amount immediately. Okay, so it's a little time consuming. But it will build your credit file without you actually ever having to pay any interest.

In summary:

  • never ever miss a payment
  • don't go wild and buy things that you won't be able to repay
  • start borrowing and repaying as soon as you can
  • and finally, BE RESPONSIBLE!!!

I hope this post hasn't been too ridiculously tedious for you to read- and I also hope that you might be able to take something away from it.

Have you got any advice that I missed out?

100 things you can't move house without

I think that anybody who has moved away from home and got themselves their own place would agree with me: you have no idea how much you have taken the "little things" for granted whilst living with your parents. You know that toilet roll does actually run out? (Always at the most particularly inconvenient time also). You know that someone actually buys the 'scrubby things' that you wash dishes with? Must read!!

If you are anything like me, then you will love reading. Whether it's a full on novel, a flick through the pages of the newspaper/magazine, or even if you just tune in to check in on Jessie's Juicy Jargon ;). We all love reading, even if you don't realise it. I think it's pretty good for the soul.

Anyway, I'm so excited! Because for Christmas, I got a voucher for Waterstones! So I took  a trip to the shops and got myself not just one, but three new books! And I can't wait to get started!

So I thought I would share with you the three books I have bought.

Have you read any of them?

Irene
So, this one is a sequel of a book called Alex, that I have already read- and is a fantastic story... So hopefully, this one will be similar in it's quality. The only disappointing thing with its predecessor, was the translation, as the author is French, and I felt that a few parts of the book were 'lost in translation'. Nonetheless, the story was very gripping and page turning and I can't wait to get in to the second one!

Elizabeth Is Missing.
Well, I could never understand, when I was little, why my mum spent such a long time reading the reviews of books- for instance instead of reading the blurb she would read the reviews... well, today, I fully realised the beauty of this. I bought this book, based on the reviews of it. They are memorising, and there are so many of them, that they added extra pages on the inside!! It is supposed to be a very very good book, so I think I will start this one first.

Dark Places
This is Gillian Flynn novel, the author of Gone Girl. It goes without saying that this should be a brilliant novel. It has been recommended to me by many people. So I have finally got the chance to get my hands on a copy of my own... Have you read it?

Unfortunately, having gone back to Uni, I am going to struggle to find the time to actually read any of these books. But with a little bit of luck, I will find some time to get reading :D

We all have voices in our head.

I would like to start by clarifying that, I am not referring to schizophrenic voices in our head. I'm referring to that one that tells you not to do something that you want to do, the little nag that is deep deep down- well I've decided the important part of "getting fit" is to find that inner voice- and pay more attention to it!

Today, I ran four miles. It's official I found my inner voice. It was singing loudly (inside my head-don't worry) whilst I was jogging along. My inner voice was cheering me on when it was getting tough... Come on Jesssieeeeeeee!

Four miles might not be a lot to many of you, (most of you even), but for me, that is a huge achievement and I am thrilled with myself for it.

It took me 44 minutes. And I stopped three times. Once because I got lost (hahah). second because I was getting cramp in my legs and needed to stretch out, and third because I had made it to the top of a really big hill, and my inner voice thought I deserved it!

My question today, is- who else has found that inner voice, the one that tells you to put down the crisps, and pick up your trainers? the one that encourages you to get up early in the morning and run, no matter what the weather...?

Jessie :)

HELLO JANEWARY

Hiiiiiiiii everybody!

I suppose apologies are in order! I'm sorry I've not posted for such a long time, I will be getting back in to the swing of blogging more regularly again.

The New Year has bought with it lots of changes for me. I have probably already done more exercise in 2015 than I did in the whole of 2014. Wait, in the whole of 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000... You get the idea... A lot of exercise.

I have been forcing myself out of bed in the mornings to go on a jog (no matter what the weather). I have been running through wind, rain, STORMS, snow, hail, and of course sunshine. Gosh, in the first two week of the year I have already endured most weather types!

Anyway, I am actually quite enjoying it. Okay, laugh on... Anyone who knows me will be nothing but surprised and finding this post highly amusing... But, honestly, I am actually enjoying going for a morning run.

Oh, and my exercise classes that I have been going to as well! Unbelievable!

Anyway, I suppose in getting fit everyone needs a goal. Now ordinarily I would tell you I don't care about my "weight" its my fitness that I am trying to improve. Well, that's not this case this time. I am to lose 1.5 stone. I am giving myself three months of hard work to do this. And then not to mention the horrible food limitations...

I walk around the supermarket, and food that I don't even like looks amazing... But all too fatty. Veg and fruit and protein for me!

Anyway, what was your New Years Resolution? Do you think you will last longer than me? Or have you already dropped it?

Thanks for reading,

Thought of the day 06/01/2015

So this is my first thought I have had a chance to put on here for a while.

Obviously Christmas took up a lot of time, and blogging did get put down the list of priorities slightly... However, the new term begins soon, so in turn, so will my favourite form of procrastination. So watch this space!!

Anyway, today's thought of the days is dedicated to a special lady who has gone doolally/cuckoo/I don't know how to save her. So I have found a bunch of quotes to help... hopefully... fingers crossed!

So this is the thought (felt by my friend):
But, I tell her,

And, that we are here for her:

I believe that:

People who run back to their ex

Gave up on trying to do better

And, that...

And....

And... You should...

I wish you would think like this...

My thoughts exactly...

We all appreciate this is a difficult place to be...

But not looking back is the most important part... because

I think you should text him (or let me text him) saying:
Because it is totally true!

But I want to finish with this one,

Love you darling. Take the right step xxx

Christmas Eve craziness

Just like many of you I expect this week has been one full of various preparations for the big day. Oh, how we all end up scurrying about in the days running up to Christmas… Well, that’s me pretty much done. I am now on the train home (YAYYYY) and will be arriving at my destination in approximately five hours.

I’m slightly concerned about my bag though, which is at the bottom of the bag stacking pile (as I was one of the first stops) and I really hope nothing too heavy gets slammed on top of all of my lovely wrapped presents! (Here’s hoping they’re okay!)

Anyone who knows me personally, will know that I am very much a "light traveller" so they
will understand that the fact that the necessity for me to travel with a large holdall/suitcase is
definitely going to be simply to accommodate presents. See, I really have bought quite a lot..

I can’t believe how many presents I have done for everyone this year… It is the first year that I have ever ‘started early’ (by this I started mid- November- I know some of you crazy fools will have started even earlier) and I have decided that the process of ‘starting early’ is actually catastrophic in the financial respect… wonderful for your friends and family though….

Basically I discovered that I ended up buying so much more for all of my recipients as I kept seeing little bits and pieces that would be a good 'stocking filler'; or thinking of a new ‘really great idea for a big present’ …

You know how the general ‘chit chat’ you get from every sales assistant is

“So is that you finished your shopping for Christmas now?”

Well, I have decided that until Christmas day, I will never fully be ‘finished’ because I will just continue to buy new bits and pieces until I no longer can! It’s so bad! But I really do love giving presents!

So, anyway, once I arrive back home (about midday Christmas Eve) my delightful Daddy will be coming to meet me; and as is tradition… I will be going Christmas shopping with him.

Christmas Eve is the day that my dad starts and finishes his Christmas shopping.

Crazy, I know! And, like I said, it is traditional. Every Christmas as far back as I can remember, I go Christmas shopping with my Dad. Just the two of us. And I love it. It’s one of my favourite parts of Christmas. Especially now that I live away from home… It’s very rare to spend solid time just with my Dad, so it will be lovely.

Anyway, I would like to wish all of my lovely readers a very, very, Merry Christmas!

Jessie,

Bumble and Bumble Mending Masque

So I have had ,my eye on the Bumble and Bumble mending hair masque for a while now.

Seeing it at Boots yesterday (£30.00) I decided that I was going to justify a spend on this new (agreeably indulgent) product. My hair has got reasonably long now, and with blonde highlights I find that going swimming regularly takes its toll on my luscious locks. So, yes, I had decided I was going to make this purchase...

And then came the interference, my boyfriend pretty much refused to standby and watch me pay £30.00 for a hair mask.

But I really need it
It's only the branding you're paying for...
(To be fair I should be fully aware of this as a Marketing student)

So, in the end, I didn't buy any form of mending hair masque... I would like to know, has anyone tried this product? Is it justifiable? I definitely don't mind going back and making that purchase- but I just wondered if anyone has used it?

Let me know in the comments below :)
